This is the snippet of question that  I received from Amie regarding a petition paper for a honey jar spell that she was reading about on Free Candle Spells.

Here was how I was taught by cat yronwode, who has a Hoodoo Course that I took many years ago. First, get a clean white piece of paper and a marker. Then write your intended’s name on it nine times, one right under the other (see photo). The one you want to love needs to have their name written first, then yours. For this example, I am using the names Olive Oyl and Popeye, with Popeye being the one who is creating the honey jar.

Then you will write your name on top of your intended’s name nine times, one name written under another, like in the second photo. For the photo, you will see not only Popeye’s name written across Olive Oyl’s nine times but also the last step of encircling it with a proclamation or spell intent. In this last step, which you will find the hardest to do, you MUST not lift your pen until you have joined the first and last letter together (very hard to do). If you err and lift your pen by accident, you must begin whole petition paper writing over again. In this example, I wrote “Marry me and live with me in a long lasting loving relationship” or something along those lines. Again, the most important part is that you write and spin your paper in a circular motion while writing and without lifting your pen. Once you have joined your first letter and last letter together with the pen stroke, lift pen and cross the “t’s” and dot the “i’s”.

Now you can continue with your honey jar spell for love, placing in the center of the petition paper used tissues from intimate relations, a hair from his or her head, nail clippings, two matched Lodestones, cinnamon, rose petals and other items reputed to bring about love.

I have encountered many situation and have created candle spells specific for certain situation, but one that I suggested to a client is becoming to manifest really positive energy and my client sent me photos to share with you.

In this situation, the client is in love with a gentleman who is a widower and has one child, a daughter in her early 20′s. The daughter, while graduating from high school, has not moved onto college, nor has she gained employment. It is as if she is ‘stuck’ in a void – both situational and culturally – as the family is Latino and she may have an unspoken message of not leaving her widower father until she marries. She does not leave the home, except to perform household duties, and to my client, it seems she has become the ‘little wife’ , in a sense. My client, a single woman with no children, love this man dearly, but knows the man would never allow their relationship to blossom further without making sure the daughter is on her way.

My client wanted to burn a black doll at my year end banishing negativity burn, as there is some stress and maybe a little animosity between the two women in this man’s life. I suggested that we do not have and send her away forever, but to gently and lovingly assist her into a fabulous new life on her own. Even though my client was scratching her head, I explained that in the future she may need this girl’s assistance, so my client should not ‘burn her bridges’. I said that it would be better, and more subtle, to wish her love and happiness as she moves out. She was willing to give it a try.

First, I suggested to create a poppet or doll in the image as close to the young woman as she could (see photo). I suggested stuffing the doll with sweet things such as a peppermint (for clarity) in the head, rosemary and rose petals (for woman’s courage and love of self) in the body, and maybe to add some cinnamon or red chili peppers (to spice or ‘heat things up’ – not for sex but to get her to hurry it up and enjoy the process). All of these things are either in your garden, spice cabinet and/or can be found in your nearby store.

I then told her to write a small petition paper, explaining that she loves the girls’ father and would want her to allow their relationship to bloom – if she would move on and gain employment or go to college, meet a handsome fella and move into her own apartment, along with driving a zippy new car she paid for herself. The client created a honey jar spell with this intention (see photos) and I suggested to take it one step further and create a diorama of the lifestyle – like a vision board – to place the poppet in when it is not near the honey jar candle, so that to doll will ‘get used to’ having this fine life m clients is wishing for her.

Since the client has created this spell, the daughter has been more civil towards the client and even has asked her to help her do something related to the clients wishes. Since both  the client and the intended mans’ families are from the same town in Mexico, they are all traveling to Mexico (no together) to visit. We will have to find out what happens when my client returns!

On another note, since she is in love with the man as well and wants to further their relationship, she is also working a love spell poppet/doll on him, too! (Smart girl!) She created a red doll (remember red for the woo-woo!) and a honey jar for the man, stuffing into the doll a hair net that he wore and left out for her to get (remember, DNA or worn clothing is a good personal concern for candle magick). She keeps his image on her love altar (see photos) when she does not take to doll to her bed, placing it on ‘his’ pillow on ‘his’ side of the bed, and she talks to it as if it is him (one way to manifest something to come true). She told me that he told her that some nights he feels like someone is rubbing his hair (she is – magickally!) and he wonders if she is thinking of him at that time (well, DUH!).

Sweet substances, by its various forms, has been used in traditional spells to “sweeten up” someone to see things your way for centuries. Sugar, whether white, light brown, dark brown or raw, in crystals or in liquid cane syrup such as Karo or Golden Barrel syrup, is the most economical way of using this substance when you want a lover to see you, get a boss to give you a raise or to attract money to you or bring in business like “bees to honey”.

In the majority of different spells that are passed down by tradition, one sweetener like sugar can be substituted for another and you can custom make your jar spell by using white sugar or Karo syrup if the person you want to get into their good graces is Caucasian, light brown sugar or honey for a Latino or a light skinned person of African descent, and dark brown sugar or molasses if the person is a darker brown person of African races.

Molasses is the traditional offering to the Yoruba Goddess Yemaya/Yemoja/Iemanja at the seashore and honey is an offering to the river Goddess Ochun/Oshun/Oxum in the religion of Santeria/Lukumi/Ifa.

I am frequently asked on the telephone what additives to put in a honey jar to sweeten someone for love and romance in relationships. Most of you do not have access to ‘exotic’ herb stores where you will find obscure powders and roots, so I have combined a list of herbs, spices and that you can pick up from your local neighborhood store. You would be surprised how many we used in everyday cooking and how we ‘enchant’ the ones we love every time we open the oven door!

Here is a list of some common herbs and spices that you can place in your Honey Jar Spell:

Rosemary – for empowering the woman in he relationship; upper hand in the family decisions.

Rose Petals - romantic love and sexual attractiveness; make the heart of the intended soften towards them.

Red Pepper – just a little will “heat things up” passionately.

Cinnamon – traditional love drawing spice; gives a ‘warm radiance” to the feelings you receive from intended.

Ginger – another fiery root that “heats things up” between a couple.

Catnip – the herb felines love the most; make a woman “intoxicating” to a man.

Sage - Gives a woman strength to conqueror a man.

Cherry Bark – said to get you “what you want” in love and physical relationships.

Cardamom – reputed to bring good luck in love affairs and those intimate times.

Apple – used in particular love spell as a receptacle to hold other ingredients for couples to get along with each other

Vanilla – when placed in sugar, it encourages all that eat the sugar to ‘be sweet’.

Tea – yes, the camellia thea leaf we love to drink! A special brew with a woman’s soiled underwear keeps her man around.

Orange –  the fruit of the Yoruba goddess of love and sexuality, dried peel can go into the honey jar to get married.

Bay Leaves – promotes a long, happy marriage.

Caraway – said to keep a partner faithful.

Dill – reputed to restore sexual vigor and desire and break love jinxes.

Hibiscus – use to decorate around the honey jar as an offering to the Chuparosa Hummingbird of Love.

Lemon Grass -is said to heighten romance and sexual pleasure.

Licorice – can be used in a mojo bag to control you love.

Clove – use to draw someone closer

Marjoram –  use for peace and happiness in the family

Just wanted to show you a pic of this trabajo (“job” in spanish) I’m doing as I told you before its dedicated to Ochun. I lit a yellow candle, put it on top of the jar and tied a yellow and pink ribbon around the cap of the jar then prayed to Ochun to bring my boyfriend back to me. I did it for 25 consecutive days. He did come back but we argued, fought and he left once again. Now he’s gone again and I haven’t heard from him in a few days, so now I’m doing the 4 caminos (“roads” in Spanish or more likely “crossroads”) which would be 3 more sets. This would keep him from leaving. So now I tied the ribbon on the opposite side. when I’m done with the three sets its going to look like a cross.

Right now I’m on about my seventh day, now what freaked me out was that after I took an Oshun bath I started praying to her in front of the candle. The flame was extremely high then it parted into 2 seperate wicks with 2 high flames. As they were burning, the flames became so small then the main wick turned off. After the 2nd flame turned off, I turned the candle on again. Also, if you look closely at the pics, you can see specks in the mirror which is actually candle wax splattered from just seven days of burning them.

Jacqueline please tell me what you think… I know it’s not good.. I feel there’s a negative force that is tearing my boyfreind and me apart. I don’t believe that Oshun is against bringing us back together. The candles I’ve been burning have been burning faster than usual and it usually leaves a wax residue. I just think that someone else might be doing something against my boyfriend and me. Tt’s really scary to actually see a flame just shut off with nothing triggering it. Do you have any specific candles for my case? Any recommendations at all?

Thank you for all the pictures, but they neve came through! Now, here’s my thoughts.

First, honey jars are not Santeria/Lukumi/Ifa religious based, so my question here is this: Why are you mixing a traditional hoodoo/conjure/rootwork spell (the honey jar) with a goddess/deity of an African religion?

Secondly, what is the “4 Cuatros” (4 Corners) Spell at the crossroads? Why would someone petition Ellegua (Guardian of the Crossroads) for love? Ellegua is for making decisions that you can live with. For example, I was living in one state and hesitant about staying or moving back to my original sate I lived for many years. I did not know what to do. I did a spell at the crossroads to tell Ellegua to ‘open my paths’ and guide me to the best way and, I would accpet the decision as I relinquished all powers of discernment on this subject to him. I moved within a month. Done deal.

It makes me want to jump up and down in my office when I see the Saints/Santos/Orichas (spelled correctly) petitioned without any knowledge for which is the Orichas’ jurisdiction. Unless it was explained to me wrong – and I will give this inch of doubt – unless your spiritual worker was telling you, “Hey! Let’s do a spell for Ellegua at the crossroads and let HIM decide whether you two should be together or not -AND put to boot to your jeans back pockets or his, to see where you’ll end up”. THAT might have been their intention – whether or not it was explained to you or not.

Again readers, this is a good case for sticking with one spiritual worker until you see or do not see results – then going ahead and say to them “Thank you for your time.” and move on and question – not to question while still working with them. Pitting one worker against another by doubting one and talking about or questioning their motives behind their backs is not good.

I have sent many people back to their spiritual worker that they are currently with until they get a feeling it isn’t working, then come see me. Again, spellwork takes time and unfortunately, I say daily, this is not Burger King where you ‘have it your way’ and in a minute and a half.

You are right in one manner – Ochun does appear to not want the two of you together. Now it is up to you to accept it and move on – with Faith – that there is something ‘out there’ that is your destiny.

Please remember, if there is a child or children involved, you will meet and greet this person for the rest of your lives – like the guy in Outkast said “Graduation and the First Day of School” – but don’t forget the childs’ wedding day and births of grandchildren.

Yes if the basic feelings are still the same. You can ‘re-work’ it. Here is an example.

You meet Johnny and even if he is the ‘Leader of the Pack’, you love him so and want to be with him forever. You create a Honey Jar. You do your ‘thang’ with it and you get Johnny to park the motorcycle and put a ring on your finger. All is well in wedded bliss.

Then, maybe after a car, home and a few little Johnnys running around, you fall into a ‘love rut’ and you want to rekindle that hot and heavy stuff going on in the back of your Daddy’s T-Bird (convertible, no less!). You take out your original items, rinse it off in running water, keep everything that you can (cinnamon stick, petition paper, lodestones, photo or lick of hair – whatever) and rinse the honey down the drain.

Now re-write the petition paper, add new herbs, if necessary, maybe a fresh hair lock (nail clipping, soiled sexual fluid tissue) fresh honey and reseal. Please in fire-safe plate, cereal bowl or dish and burn candles as before.

Voila! Just make sure you don’t want any more little Johnnnys running around!

Now, if ya want to ‘kill tha bum’, don’t use it. If love is gone, and you got to start doing revenge work or child support candle work, take the original honey jar to the river, uncap, rinse in river water, undo everything (binding, strings, fish hooks) and release everything into the river (photos, lodestones, honey – all of it). Moving water carries it away (old tradition).

Hi Jacqueline!

i lit up a candle for a love binding. the candle goes on top of a jar filled with honey, plant root, herbs, sand and cut out personal belongings such as pubic hair, pictures, pillow case to say the least… the work is for oshun. today is the fifth day which is oshuns favorite #. as i lit it the flame was high but nothing drastic. i also put some john the conquer incense. as i prayed the flame became even higher. it was amazing. the top of the wick became like a little black ball then the flame became almost bigger then the candle itself. all of a sudden the candle fell off the top of the jar. when i put it back the fire was still very high. and the wick had a little gold spark at the tip which turned into another little black ball. once the candle finished it left thick drip wax marks on top. i wish i would have taken a picture. nothing close has happened in the 4 days prior. i feel like the work may be kicking in but as far as the candle falling maybe my boyfriend resisting the actual work. what do you think?

OK…here’s my honest opinion (and I guess that is why you asked me, right?) First, I am confused as to why to mixed traditions to make a honey jar (without listing herbs and roots) and making it an offering to Ochun?

READERS: Ochun is the Yoruba goddess of love, sexuality, gold, prosperity and all the sweet things in life. Honey is her favorite offering of food – but there are others. Her offerings are done in a series of 5 – with this being the number associated with her – and today (Tuesday, April 21, 2009 would technically be the ‘fifth’ day of the candle burn). Ochun ( pronounced “oh-CHOON”) is sometimes spelled Oshun with an ‘s’ BUT there is no “sh” (like in ‘shell’) in the Yoruban pronunciation of her name. There is another God, Osun (pronounced “oh-SOON”) which also sometimes is confused with Ochun/proper pronounciation. The “sh as in shell” pronounciation is strictly latter day Latino-influenced pronounciation.

The thing that sounds quirky to me is that you are using a Conjure/Hoodoo/Rootwork practice (honey jar) and the Lukimi/Santeria practice of offerings to a Yoruba goddess? Are you familiar to the religion Lukimi/Santeria? Are you well studied in Conjure/Hoodoo/ Rootwork? Why mix practices?

For me, the candle falling off would be an indication of a non-acceptance of the offering or things will not work out as planned. The ultimate decision maker will be the boyfriends reaction to you. You will either see a heightened response to you in a more loving and sexual way or he will be acting the same.

Since there is no indication of roots and herbs named in your letter, I have no idea if they are the appropriate ones to use for you particular situation. Using the John the Conqueror incense is definitely a Conjure/Hoodoo/Rootwork thing.

You state that you ‘feel like the work may be kicking in’ then go with your feelings and watch for signs.

Michael asked me to give some observations about his candle and it is evident that this was for love, and he indicated that he used pictures of him and her, hairs, rose petals and lodestones.

The interesting thing is how the one wick separated into two flames (see photo). this is a VERY good sign that you will be successful in love with this young lady.

My only thought is that you ‘temper’ the honey jar with either covering the red with a white candle, or the next candle you burn be a pink one. Again, remember red is energy, intense and hot, and you don’t want your new relationship to ‘run red hot’ – or, that you are so sensually overstimulated that there is nothing else but the physical, if you know what I mean. You need affection and romance (pink) and appreciation for each others’ minds (white). So, to keep this relationship more than just the sexual, I would alternated the red with either pink or white candles.

What does it mean when a candle is melting very quick and there is a lot of popping noises? I had a candle (that would normally melt in 3 hours) melted in 40 minutes. Also at the end, there were popping noises and a “big bang” occurred. The flame just exploded and some parts just flew off around the altar. This happened on the honey jar lid.

Michael, your timing was exquisite since I had another ask the very same thing! 

In your situation that you described, you have not one but two things happening – a ‘quick burn’ and ‘candles talking’ . You candle that should have taken 3 hours burns in 40 minutes, that means that the intensity of the emotions in regards to the honey jars are intense – you are VERY focused on your end result – the love of the person (or thing) in the honey jar (honey jars can be used for love but also for a job or money). I would consider this that your end result will come fast.

The ‘explosion’ and ‘popping’ noises at the end of the candle burn, given that we are ruling out the physical reason of sizzling oil by products (think of the sizzling of sausages or bacon, as result of excess oil in the pan), and if there was not a lot of oil on the top of the lid, I would consider it a sign of the Spirit of the Intention of the Candle ‘arguing’ with the recipient – as if the one in the honey jar was resisting. The ‘explosion’ would be that your candle ‘broke through’ the barrier to this endeavor or person. I would think that you might have ‘gotten through’ to this person.

All in all, I would consider it a very positive sign. Keep us posted on how long this end result comes about!
