In today’s world, we view Saint Valentine as the Saint who assists us in finding a lover and all the other rituals we have that is associated with February 14th such as giving cards, chocolates, jewelry, or sending flowers from the florist. Roses are the traditional flower to give on this day of lovers. There is a very different reason that San Valentin, or St. Valentine, is associated with love and lovers.

Saint Valentine, born in Italy and was a Holy Priest in Rome, assisted martyrs under persecution and was beheaded on the date that is set aside for lovers – February 14th. Before capture, he assisted St.Marius and family to give aid and safe lodging to those being sought out for their religious beliefs.

Saint Valentine, also known as San Valentin, is associated with lovers in the fact that on February 15th, a heathen festival in honor of their goddess Februata Juno, was held. In part of a custom, boys were to pick out slips of paper with girls’ names on them to court romantically. It is written that on the day after Valentine’s beating and beheading, the boxes where the name billets were gathered were filled with slips of paper with Valentine’s name on them. Since then, he has been associated with love and lovers.

Saint Valentine/San Valentin Love Candle Spell

INGREDIENTS

2 pink glass encased 7-day “novena” or “vigil” candles

Photos of each of you separately, to attach to outside glass of candle

Full name and birth date of each of you, on a slip of paper known as a ‘name paper’.

1 bottle of “Adam and Eve” or “Fire of Love” Anointing Oil

1 Red Rose in vase

1 glass Red or Blush Wine

Pinch of Ground Cinnamon

Clean candle with Lemon Juice or Florida Water as instructed in this blog post, “Candle Spell Candle Preparation Step by Step for Candleburning Success!”. Let set to dry.

Continue to follow steps to candle preparation, including carving oil wells and putting oil in the three holes. Sprinkle a good pinch of ground cinnamon over each candle. Attach name and birth date paper to bottom of candle and photo to each candle. Set a love altar somewhere, as in the bedroom, where you can leave candle lit continuously,setting the rose and the wine next to the two candles. Pray that St. Valentine will make each of you tender and loving only to each other, forsaking all others, until the end of time.

When candles are finished, take photos, name papers, rose petals and wine to the back yard of your home. Dig a small hole and place all in it, pouring the wine over all of the papers and petals. Cover with the dirt and place a good sized rock over it, to make the spot. You may want to consider planting a rose bush over the spot, in remembrance of Saint Valentine.

I have encountered many situation and have created candle spells specific for certain situation, but one that I suggested to a client is becoming to manifest really positive energy and my client sent me photos to share with you.

In this situation, the client is in love with a gentleman who is a widower and has one child, a daughter in her early 20′s. The daughter, while graduating from high school, has not moved onto college, nor has she gained employment. It is as if she is ‘stuck’ in a void – both situational and culturally – as the family is Latino and she may have an unspoken message of not leaving her widower father until she marries. She does not leave the home, except to perform household duties, and to my client, it seems she has become the ‘little wife’ , in a sense. My client, a single woman with no children, love this man dearly, but knows the man would never allow their relationship to blossom further without making sure the daughter is on her way.

My client wanted to burn a black doll at my year end banishing negativity burn, as there is some stress and maybe a little animosity between the two women in this man’s life. I suggested that we do not have and send her away forever, but to gently and lovingly assist her into a fabulous new life on her own. Even though my client was scratching her head, I explained that in the future she may need this girl’s assistance, so my client should not ‘burn her bridges’. I said that it would be better, and more subtle, to wish her love and happiness as she moves out. She was willing to give it a try.

First, I suggested to create a poppet or doll in the image as close to the young woman as she could (see photo). I suggested stuffing the doll with sweet things such as a peppermint (for clarity) in the head, rosemary and rose petals (for woman’s courage and love of self) in the body, and maybe to add some cinnamon or red chili peppers (to spice or ‘heat things up’ – not for sex but to get her to hurry it up and enjoy the process). All of these things are either in your garden, spice cabinet and/or can be found in your nearby store.

I then told her to write a small petition paper, explaining that she loves the girls’ father and would want her to allow their relationship to bloom – if she would move on and gain employment or go to college, meet a handsome fella and move into her own apartment, along with driving a zippy new car she paid for herself. The client created a honey jar spell with this intention (see photos) and I suggested to take it one step further and create a diorama of the lifestyle – like a vision board – to place the poppet in when it is not near the honey jar candle, so that to doll will ‘get used to’ having this fine life m clients is wishing for her.

Since the client has created this spell, the daughter has been more civil towards the client and even has asked her to help her do something related to the clients wishes. Since both  the client and the intended mans’ families are from the same town in Mexico, they are all traveling to Mexico (no together) to visit. We will have to find out what happens when my client returns!

On another note, since she is in love with the man as well and wants to further their relationship, she is also working a love spell poppet/doll on him, too! (Smart girl!) She created a red doll (remember red for the woo-woo!) and a honey jar for the man, stuffing into the doll a hair net that he wore and left out for her to get (remember, DNA or worn clothing is a good personal concern for candle magick). She keeps his image on her love altar (see photos) when she does not take to doll to her bed, placing it on ‘his’ pillow on ‘his’ side of the bed, and she talks to it as if it is him (one way to manifest something to come true). She told me that he told her that some nights he feels like someone is rubbing his hair (she is – magickally!) and he wonders if she is thinking of him at that time (well, DUH!).

So we have covered some reasons that your candle spell wasn’t working with problems that may have existed before you even considered putting flame to a wick. The second part delved into cheap changing of products and the possibility of being a victim of a rip-off artist. Part three rounds up some more things to consider even after you have eliminated the problems brought up in Parts 1 and 2.

We have already explored the possible reasons of why your love spell is not working with some pre-ritual problems that may forewarn of disastrous results. You can read this on the first part of this series titled, “Free Candle Spells | Why Your Love Candle Spell Isn’t Working Pt. 1 (click on blue words to go to article).

The second part of this three part series will talk about things that you may be doing that are thwarting your success in your love candle ritual.

1. You are doubtful of the power of candle spell magic and/or you do not have confidence in your own power. – Damn that brain! It keeps you from attaining what you want. You can talk your way right into a funk so low that even Satan needs to send a search party. All jokes aside, you may be thwarting your own success by doing something as little as saying, “I HOPE this candle will bring to me (insert name here)” or “Please let me and (name our target here) get together/back together/fall in love”. URRRRT….NO! One of the best ways to negate any positivity in candle burning is wishing and hoping something will happen. It is better that you wait until you either had a good cuppa joe or feel raging hormones before you light a candle with a POSITIVE MIND. Examples of statements that are truly positive are something like “With the lighting of this candle, I FIRMLY BELIEVE that (insert name here) and I will become a couple in a long lasting and happy relationship that will last forever” or “I KNOW that with the lighting of this candle, I WILL be the next girlfriend/lover/wife of (insert name here”. See how much more affirmative and positive those two statements are?

2. You are skimping on ritual and product or editing the length of ritual - When you read a good spell that just ‘clicks’ with you or if you are under a root workers suggestion to do something, do not buy or obtain items because you believe they can stand in for the real thing  ’in a pinch’. I have had people ask me if they could use a half burned fragrance candle that is PINK like I suggested, but they don’t want to let it ‘go to waste’ so they want to substitute it for a new candle. Look, that candle that was being considered for substitution was meant to cover odors in the bathroom – why would you want to now suggest to use it for a love spell (unless you want your love affair to go down the toilet, right?). The original purchase of the candle was NOT for magic, but clearing the room of nasty odors. Don’t be cheap and go get a fresh, new candle. Also, if you are to do something for X amount of nights, don’t cheat yourself by figuring that you do not need to do the prayer or ritual every day/night. The Saints do not care if you are bone tired, just five minutes of meditation or prayer will do the trick. Heck, even when I was running out the door one morning, I paused and extended my right hand, saying to the candle, “You know my intentions, I just got to not be late for work!”. I backed it up with a wee bit more time in the evening to make sure I was applying the time.

3. You are the victim of a ‘rip off’ artist - They are out there, and more come out of the woodwork when life gets tough. Each spiritual worker, root worker or spell caster determines what is their price for products and their time and work. Some things do take quite a lot of money, like making sure all the items have been properly cleansed, blessed and anointed. Some things are pricey if you are practicing a certain methodology or belief system. But, if you are being charged $100.00 for a candle, without any notice of it being lit or not, you are being victimized when you are at a most vulnerable emotional state. Shame on them!

I have recently seen a pattern in regards to the line of questioning that I am getting in my e-mails regarding love spells. It seems that there are those who are not happy with the outcome or how long it is taking. I thought I would write an article to address some issues or situations that you may be having or are seeing with candle spell work. This is part 1 of a 3 part series that I am writing to address issues in failed love candle spells.

Here is the scenario; you met a guy and you two are really hitting it off. You want to ‘turn it up’, meaning you want to make the two of you get closer. You choose to find a candle spell or you visit the botanica, candle shop or a spiritual worker to do the work for you. It has been some time, not terribly long, but you are not seeing the results you want. Examine these reasons why the love candle spell may not be working and see if any of them sounds familiar.

1. Magic is not “Guaranteed” - Pure and simple. Magic, candles, incantations or even prayers, are the infusion of wishes, desires and hopes that you are releasing into the ethers of the Universe. I see clients all the time who have gone from one reader to a psychic to a spiritual worker, all for naught, because each one had done work for the person/client and it did not turn out the way it was intended or not at all. The Internet is chock full of websites promising, even assuring the reader that their spells ar “100% Guaranteed”.Truth. If it is not meant to Be, then the Almighty will not allow it to happen. The girl or guy might be the most handsome/beautiful/gorgeous body Heaven sent down, but if their is evil intent afoot in the Future and the Higher Power that resides in the clouds doesn’t want you to experience it, then no amount of candles will make It happen. You have to ask, pray, meditate or incant what you desire, but with the understanding of this:

It Might Not Happen Despite How Many Candles You Burn.

‘ Nuff said!

2. You have unrealistic goals – This falls into the “George Clooney or (insert movie/rock star’s name here)” section. There is just some circles that you and your target will circulate in and your paths will NOT cross. Another scenario is the “I’ll wait forever for you, Eddie!” syndrome, despite Eddie being married with 4 kids and a mortgage that would make Donald Trump cringe. Really? You want to become ‘Instant Step-Mom?’. Brave girl. The same goes for men as well; be careful what you wish for…..

3. There are underlying issues, problems and situations to take into consideration (further enhancing the above) – OK, so Eddie is really and truly is “the One”. He’s got 4 kids, a mortgage, and a wife that is taking him to the cleaners. Take a moment and think 5 years down the road – are you planning to be the major ‘breadwinner’ in your relationship with Eddie because three quarters of his check goes to HER? This is an example of what could happen once you are fully entrenched into a relationship. If she/he is cheating now, using now, lying now, then it is bound to happen later as well. Do not try to “fix” another person (which is a great majority of concerns lately). They are what or who they are; love them with all their faults or move on.

First let me say thank you for all the information you are giving here. I have learned so much! I am still confused on one thing. I read in the blog here that you suggest pink candles for love spells, but on many other places on the Internet, it says red candles for love candle spells? This is even in some websites that sells love candle kits already made up for you. What gives? You say one way, they say another. I am confused. Please help!

Thank you for the compliments on the site – I try my best! Let me try to explain about candles and their color meaning in love candle spell work.

If you remember in the Colonial days, candles were made from beef and mutton tallow, the fat scraped off the hide of cattle and sheep that was melted, had cotton string wicks dipped into it, and were the only source of light to early Americans (and others all over the world). This went on until the discovery of gas lamps and eventually, electricity. Tallow candles were one color – a creamy off-white. Anyone using candles for magical work usually oiled the candle and rolled them in ground herbs for the magical boost to the candle. There were no colored wax candles like we have today.

In the history of colored candles for magical work, red was the oldest color associated with love. I remember when I was in my teens I had liked this boy. I got ahold of a love candle spell book and obtained the items required, including a red candle. I did my spell under the right Moon and WHAMMY – it worked! Only in the wrong way! He wanted me to take a Polaroid photo of myself naked and send it to him! This was in 1975, and that totally freaked me out! I got rid of him in a hurry! It scared me so that I did not do spell work for a very long time.

Now, see that I used a red candle and what kind of attention I got from my target – sexual. I didn’t understand this for a long time until I started doing candle work like I do now. The energy of a red candle is INTENSE – which translates in our emotions as PHYSICAL DESIRE.

So, thinking about  Fast Luck Candle Spells, which use red candles, if the energy is intense and also resonates physical desire, how does this connect with Fast Luck? In my experiences, anything worth having is something you DESIRE  - new car, home, great job, money in the bank , right? The wanting of am item is desire, like a lover or that one thing that will make that emotion satisfied.

Red candles work when you do not want an emotional connection. They are your “wham bam, thank you, M’am” – type candles. They are all about the physical. Now, if this is the kind of relationship you want, because of distance apart, work demands, family, etc. – this is the right candle to use.

Pink candles mix the passion of the red candle with the white of purity and peace. The energy of this candle is affectionate, playful, cuddly. Why do you think pink is probably the most favorite color of most little girls? Because it is non-threatening (passion and desire can be scary) and it is cuddly, like little girls. If getting into his (or her) mind, finding out their dreams, getting to know them as a person is something you want out of your relationship, then use pink candles. Dear Jacqueline,

I am writing to you about how I took you candle spell and added a little more “oomph” to it candle wise, and I got my man to commit to a relationship. I used your pink St. Jude Candle Spell anointed with Come to Me Oil and added a photo of him, a lock of his hair and a Red Candle anointed with Fire of Love Oil.

I wrote in a circle on the back of the picture an incantation that I wanted hime to want only me, placed the lock of hair on top of it, placed the pink St. Jude candle on top of that and the red candle next to it. I started this on the New Moon in April and it took only 8 days before he sent me a letter saying that he wanted me to be there for him when he gets back (he’s away right now).

I never had the confidence to do candle spells on my own and always went to this candle store in town and they would light candles for me but now I am going to continue to keep reading your site.

I have a question, can I ask questions about my candle work like candle colors and types of oils by contacting you?

Thank you for sharing your candle success! I hope that the two of you will be together soon – in the same place!

Your letter brings up a good point, you can change up ANY candle spell to make it more personal or more your “own” and you can work your own candle magic on your own as well. All you have to do is follow the right candle color, follow the Moon cycle (not all do this) and use the proper ingredients. Is there any wrong way to make chocolate chip cookies? No – just some have walnuts, or pecans, or have double chocolate chips, or  even M &M’s in it. Does that make them wrong?  Nah, enjoy each and every variation on a candle spell as you are eliminating the wrong items and fine tuning to use all the good stuff.

Congratulations on your success. My only comment is to use red candles sparingly as too much red will make it more of a physical thing, which is not totally wrong, but if romance, respect and exclusivity is what you want, use more pink candles.

First let me say that I have read many of your spells and after doing so research, I consider them some of the most authentic and true spells I have ever seen – and that’s coming from Memphis!

I am ready for a relationship and I have been burning the St. Jude candles for love in my candle spells as you have instructed but to no avail. I meet someone and it looks good for a few weeks, then – poof- he’s gone. Some take the time to tell me they want to go back to their ex, but some just don’t call back. I think I am following the instructions right, so what can I be doing wrong?

Thank you for your compliments regarding the spells. I truly ‘test drive’ them, either with clients or on my family and myself, because I do not want to just give you a ‘pat answer’ to a candle spell problem. Lets go over a few things that I got an inkling on what might be the problem.

1. Are you truly ready for a relationship? – Your life may be too busy to support a relationship. If you find yourself having to ‘juggle’ a spur-of-the-moment date invitation, or you have to reschedule a dinner out, this might be a ‘red flag’ to a fella that you are hard to pin down and may be an indicator of not having time to nurture a relationship. Once a guy has his ‘eyes on you’, he wants to be able to take you out at a moment’s notice – something that is getting harder and harder to do anymore. You might want to consider freeing up some of your weekend and weeknights ‘just in case’.

2. Are you truly ready for a relationship? – Part 2 - Have you gotten over your last love? If you have not put that past relationship ‘to bed’, then you will always be pining for your old flame and comparing the new man with the last lover – and you wouldn’t want to be in that situation, would you?  It is O.K. to be single for awhile – until your heart has healed and you are filled with a hope that you WILL INDEED fine a perfect mate for you.

3. Do you gravitate towards the same character of a person? - True story: For many years, I was attracted to Latin men – that dark hair, dark eyes thing got me every time. Was this a good thing for me? NO – my personality and theirs always clashed. Why? I dunno, but I think it has got to do with my independent streak. I was like a diabetic in a candy shop – so good but so bad for me. That is when my Madrina (Godmother) told me to use the Saint Jude pink candles and give Him and God the freedom to send to me the one that was ‘right’ for me. And it happened, but I had to stop the stereotypes tape playing in my psyche. I had to accept whomever God placed in my path – no matter what – in orderto have true and lasting love.

4. Is there a pattern developing? - Can you see any correlation in the days of break up or the length of time each new relationship? This might be a time for a good reading to see if there is a ‘jinx’ or ‘curse’ placed on you by a jilted lover or a jilted lover’s ex – they want revenge sometimes as well. It would also be good to check with family members while in casual conversation, to see if anyone else knows of hard times in the love department or is there a generational curse. They really do happen.

5. Proper cleaning, charging, and burning of candles - Are you substituting one oil or product for another? Are you charging your candles during your menstrual period? Are you distracted by fear of being overheard by family or roommates? The telephone ringing? Kids yelling? Are you fearful of a fire? Have you found a place in your home to burn candles in complete peace and safety? Are you approaching your candles with a “I hope it works” or a “Please let it work” attitude? Is your heart really into it?

6. Are you skimping on steps? – Are you altering your spiritual consultant’s suggestion to do an offering? a series of baths? a thorough house cleaning? You might want to begin all over and start with a good housecleaning and a series of baths to cleanse you BEFORE beginning candle work.

Hopefully these are a good way to eliminate problems in your candle burning and will allow good things – and a love – into your life.

Hi Jacqueline!

Just wanted to show you a pic of this trabajo (“job” in spanish) I’m doing as I told you before its dedicated to Ochun. I lit a yellow candle, put it on top of the jar and tied a yellow and pink ribbon around the cap of the jar then prayed to Ochun to bring my boyfriend back to me. I did it for 25 consecutive days. He did come back but we argued, fought and he left once again. Now he’s gone again and I haven’t heard from him in a few days, so now I’m doing the 4 caminos (“roads” in Spanish or more likely “crossroads”) which would be 3 more sets. This would keep him from leaving. So now I tied the ribbon on the opposite side. when I’m done with the three sets its going to look like a cross.

Right now I’m on about my seventh day, now what freaked me out was that after I took an Oshun bath I started praying to her in front of the candle. The flame was extremely high then it parted into 2 seperate wicks with 2 high flames. As they were burning, the flames became so small then the main wick turned off. After the 2nd flame turned off, I turned the candle on again. Also, if you look closely at the pics, you can see specks in the mirror which is actually candle wax splattered from just seven days of burning them.

Jacqueline please tell me what you think… I know it’s not good.. I feel there’s a negative force that is tearing my boyfreind and me apart. I don’t believe that Oshun is against bringing us back together. The candles I’ve been burning have been burning faster than usual and it usually leaves a wax residue. I just think that someone else might be doing something against my boyfriend and me. Tt’s really scary to actually see a flame just shut off with nothing triggering it. Do you have any specific candles for my case? Any recommendations at all?

Thank you for all the pictures, but they neve came through! Now, here’s my thoughts.

First, honey jars are not Santeria/Lukumi/Ifa religious based, so my question here is this: Why are you mixing a traditional hoodoo/conjure/rootwork spell (the honey jar) with a goddess/deity of an African religion?

Secondly, what is the “4 Cuatros” (4 Corners) Spell at the crossroads? Why would someone petition Ellegua (Guardian of the Crossroads) for love? Ellegua is for making decisions that you can live with. For example, I was living in one state and hesitant about staying or moving back to my original sate I lived for many years. I did not know what to do. I did a spell at the crossroads to tell Ellegua to ‘open my paths’ and guide me to the best way and, I would accpet the decision as I relinquished all powers of discernment on this subject to him. I moved within a month. Done deal.

It makes me want to jump up and down in my office when I see the Saints/Santos/Orichas (spelled correctly) petitioned without any knowledge for which is the Orichas’ jurisdiction. Unless it was explained to me wrong – and I will give this inch of doubt – unless your spiritual worker was telling you, “Hey! Let’s do a spell for Ellegua at the crossroads and let HIM decide whether you two should be together or not -AND put to boot to your jeans back pockets or his, to see where you’ll end up”. THAT might have been their intention – whether or not it was explained to you or not.

Again readers, this is a good case for sticking with one spiritual worker until you see or do not see results – then going ahead and say to them “Thank you for your time.” and move on and question – not to question while still working with them. Pitting one worker against another by doubting one and talking about or questioning their motives behind their backs is not good.

I have sent many people back to their spiritual worker that they are currently with until they get a feeling it isn’t working, then come see me. Again, spellwork takes time and unfortunately, I say daily, this is not Burger King where you ‘have it your way’ and in a minute and a half.

You are right in one manner – Ochun does appear to not want the two of you together. Now it is up to you to accept it and move on – with Faith – that there is something ‘out there’ that is your destiny.

Please remember, if there is a child or children involved, you will meet and greet this person for the rest of your lives – like the guy in Outkast said “Graduation and the First Day of School” – but don’t forget the childs’ wedding day and births of grandchildren.

Is it necessary to cast a circle for protection to keep unwanted negative energies away before performing a ritual/love spell? Or can I cast a love spell and use my Bible to recite a script like Psalm 23.

Sherri, some people use salt as a catalyst to keep away negative energies when burning candles. I found this out when I was interviewing Stan the candle maker, who I featured in a series of interviews recently regarding candles.
