There are a lot of factors to consider when attempting to use candle burning spells to reconnect with someone. My first question would be: How long have you been apart? That right there should be the most determining piece of information needed to create a candle spell. But, because this was not offered, I am going to assume that it has not been too long.

I would take two white 7-day glass ‘novena’ or ‘vigil’ type candles and after cleaning them, label them with the full name of yourself and the other party. Then I would get some “Spirit”, “Spirit Guide”, “Come to Me” Condition Oil or even in a pinch, olive oil that you have extended your hands over and prayed a heartfelt and sincere prayer of blessing and intention. Anoint the candles with the oil, rubbing the oil in counterclock-wise to draw them back. Attache the name papers. If you have a photograph, use that as well.

Take candles to an area on your desk or where your telephone is located. This spell is best to use when you can leave the telephone (or land line) alone and answer from another part of the house. However, if this is impossible or you do not have a land line but only a cellular phone, place the cell phone between the two candles as much as possible (even overnight when you are charging it) for maximum exposure. Sit the candles on either side of the telephone in flame retardant saucers (just in case). Pray over the candles again your heartfelt prayer and follow it with one of your own belief system (Hail Mary, Our Father, etc.) Light candles and keep them lit.

It is also said that if you desire someone to call, you may wipe down the telephone with whiskey that has has loose tobacco steeping in it. The legend is that  Native American (almost everyone has them, right?) Spirit Guides will be attracted to the scent of the mixture and will activate the ‘spark’ to make a call happen.

From time to time, I sit and post something that is candle burning spell related, but has no actual spell or ingredients in it. This is one of them. Enjoy and ponder.

A question that is repeated frequently to me and as I am sure, to other spiritual workers is this: How many candles should someone burn to make changes to a situation or a person?

There are many factors that go into a calculated guess (because that is really what it is) on how long someone should burn candles for a person or enact change in something. It depends on the situation. Let’s take money as an example. I use this a lot when conversing with clients considering candle burning. How often to you need money? Only on June 27th? Only for Christmas 1999? No, the answer is more likely to be always, which it is a fact – people need money constantly – for clothing, food, shelter, children, transportation, vices (yes, that too, whether it is chocolate or cigarettes!) and what have you. So, it would be in a person’s best interest to burn a green money drawing, wealthy way or prosperity candle constantly in the home in order to continuously bring money in the house. Your cost: Green candles at the grocery store, a couple of dollars for some money drawing oil and your time and energy. Your benefits? Let’s see – talk of gas stretches for whole week (how did THAT happen?), scanned price is wrong at store so you get item free (whoopie!), someone takes you out to lunch or dinner (one meal free), girlfriend pays you back for something you got her last time you were out (she’s a keeper in the friend department) or you get a gift card from Starbucks (lattes for your secret passion days), as well as the regular things like you have something left in the bank at the end of the month. These are examples of money drawing candle spell power.

Let’s take a relationships that has been broken up for some time. First, you have to consider what was the reason for the breakup and the severity of the offense (out drinking with the friends and getting pulled over or just plain ole’ cheating) and if that is morally acceptable for you or not (that is your own heart talking). So for sake of the article, we will say you have considered to get back with the other person. There are STILL other factors you may have not considered.

First, is the other person around and/or can you contact them? What about their attitude (if you have been able to contact them?) Are they still hurting or have moved onto another person? IS there another person? Is there influential family members or friends that may be ‘stirring the pot’, so to speak? OK, so maybe you have already considered all these ideas as well and let’s say you have seen enough validation to go forth with the candle spell.

Next consideration is the cost. We all know that love don’t pay the rent and you have to factor this additional expense into your monthly budget. There are many fine spiritual workers around, but my warning to you is this; IF YOU ARE PAYING MORE THAN $10.00 FOR EACH CANDLE BEING BURNED FOR YOU YOU MUST RUN LIKE A BAT OUT OF HELL! (I am talking about the gypsy scam artists). These are the people who say things like “100% Guaranteed! My candles cost $100.00 but they always work”, or “Don’t worry my dear, we WILL get him back”. I say this because you are on a delicate emotional situation and there are people out there that hear your plight and the sound of ka-CHING! is going off in their heads. There are some unscrupulous workers out there so please, PLEASE be careful. You must determine what you can afford and what your heart tells you when you talk with that spiritual person. If the hair on the back of your neck or arms raise, go home and sit in quiet meditation and ask for Divine Guidance on the matter of the person you talked with. A good worker will not push you into something – they should be ethical enough to give you advice and allow you time to ponder it; not cajole or force you into something that you might not feel comfortable with doing.

Another thing to think about is your own personal timeline. How long is ‘too long’ to wait for Jimmy Mack to come hurry back? Traditional candle spells take from as soon as three days (I have had ones work within 24 hours sometimes) to three months. The longer you have ben apart from them, the longer it will take to get them back. I say this daily to clients. If you waited three months before making up your mind, you have three months of candle burnings just to get back to “Ground Zero” (the moment the breakup happened).So, for your sake, if you can take 24 to 48 hours of undistracted time (if possible), without suggestions from girlfriends and family, and just pray, meditate and sit in silence to determine if the relationships is ‘worth it’, and your answer is “YES!”, then get to burning candles RIGHT AWAY!

Please take time to consider all factors before committing to candle work. You must be comfortable in your mind and your heart that you can accept the outcome either way – positive or negatively, and trust that the Universe has the right things in store for you! Even when things do not go your way, you may not be aware of the outcomes of your candle spell wish, nor the lost chances of even better possibilities coming your way in the future.

One week, he is close to me and acting like we are it, then the next week he is distant or can’t come see me for some reason. I think I am doing something wrong. There are really four major things that occur when you try a candle spell and it doesn’t seem to work. Ruling out candles that were a ‘bad pour’, too much oil and herbs in the candle, being in a drafty area, the cat, your roommate or family member with a fear of fire – the list can go on and on. Here are more ‘magickal’ reasons for your unsuccessful candle spells.

The first thing is to rule out the physical: something in your preparation caused you to do something wrong, either applying the oils without enough conviction, using the ‘wrong’ products or substituting something, you were not in the right ‘frame of mind’ or you had other factors (like a menstrual period) that was affecting your energy, or you are going about the wrong way to ‘fix’ the problem. This happens most of the time with new candle workers or people with little candle burning experience.

A second reason for candle burning failure can be ‘overworking’ the spell (as I call it); this is akin to ‘obsessing’ about it to the point that your mind races with the thought of the outcome and you begin to talk about what you are doing to friends. You may begin to think, ‘Well, maybe if I had used THIS instead of THAT…’ or nit-picking your choices of products. This stress of over thinking your processing and activation of the candle will not only ‘drive you nuts’, but will also undo what you wanted to happen in the first place. You need to calm yourself and just DO IT; anoint the candle with your best intentions, use your spiritual products as you first thought would work and leave it be. You can ‘tweak’ the recipe after this candle is done. This type of candle failure is the most common with people who do candles for themselves.

Another reason that your candle might be working willy-nilly (sometimes they do, sometimes they won’t) is you are under some opposition – either by a rival for his attentions or someone who has it out for YOU! Remember the old Staples’ Singers song, “Smiling Faces” (‘Smiling faces sometimes pretend to be your friends. Smiling faces show no traces of the evil that lurks within. (Can you dig it)”). You wouldn’t believe who is against you – your BBF, your Mom, Sister, the girl that works with you, HIS Mom, Sister, other females who want him. The list can be endless, but not to fret; just do your candle work and KEEP QUIET! On the weeks that the candles are acting funny, weak, going out, etc., just re do, bolster with a white candle, burn a second candle right up against the first – WHATEVER – to keep it going.

Last but not least is maybe you are just not supposed to be with him. God and your Angels knows the end of your ‘story’ (life) and maybe this man might bring you unhappiness, strife or something even more evil – and God is telling you that ‘it just ain’t so’ when it comes to a relationship with you and him. We all can’t have everything you want (like the Stones song) but maybe your candle isn’t working is a way for the Universe to tell you that you need to wait, contemplate and listen to what your heart says about this relationship. Is there signs of control? Abuse? Is he lazy and unmotivated? A User? If you wait, a message will be sent to you – either by yourself, an incident or a friends telling you something – hat you might not have heard, seen or experienced before.

i lit up a candle for a love binding. the candle goes on top of a jar filled with honey, plant root, herbs, sand and cut out personal belongings such as pubic hair, pictures, pillow case to say the least… the work is for oshun. today is the fifth day which is oshuns favorite #. as i lit it the flame was high but nothing drastic. i also put some john the conquer incense. as i prayed the flame became even higher. it was amazing. the top of the wick became like a little black ball then the flame became almost bigger then the candle itself. all of a sudden the candle fell off the top of the jar. when i put it back the fire was still very high. and the wick had a little gold spark at the tip which turned into another little black ball. once the candle finished it left thick drip wax marks on top. i wish i would have taken a picture. nothing close has happened in the 4 days prior. i feel like the work may be kicking in but as far as the candle falling maybe my boyfriend resisting the actual work. what do you think?

OK…here’s my honest opinion (and I guess that is why you asked me, right?) First, I am confused as to why to mixed traditions to make a honey jar (without listing herbs and roots) and making it an offering to Ochun?

READERS: Ochun is the Yoruba goddess of love, sexuality, gold, prosperity and all the sweet things in life. Honey is her favorite offering of food – but there are others. Her offerings are done in a series of 5 – with this being the number associated with her – and today (Tuesday, April 21, 2009 would technically be the ‘fifth’ day of the candle burn). Ochun ( pronounced “oh-CHOON”) is sometimes spelled Oshun with an ‘s’ BUT there is no “sh” (like in ‘shell’) in the Yoruban pronunciation of her name. There is another God, Osun (pronounced “oh-SOON”) which also sometimes is confused with Ochun/proper pronounciation. The “sh as in shell” pronounciation is strictly latter day Latino-influenced pronounciation.

The thing that sounds quirky to me is that you are using a Conjure/Hoodoo/Rootwork practice (honey jar) and the Lukimi/Santeria practice of offerings to a Yoruba goddess? Are you familiar to the religion Lukimi/Santeria? Are you well studied in Conjure/Hoodoo/ Rootwork? Why mix practices?

For me, the candle falling off would be an indication of a non-acceptance of the offering or things will not work out as planned. The ultimate decision maker will be the boyfriends reaction to you. You will either see a heightened response to you in a more loving and sexual way or he will be acting the same.

Since there is no indication of roots and herbs named in your letter, I have no idea if they are the appropriate ones to use for you particular situation. Using the John the Conqueror incense is definitely a Conjure/Hoodoo/Rootwork thing.

You state that you ‘feel like the work may be kicking in’ then go with your feelings and watch for signs.
