On December 30, 2011, as I was lighting candles for people, I got a “feeling” about the ruling Orisha/Oricha for the year 2012 was going to be Ochun/Oshun/Oxum, also known as La Caridad de Cobre. I wrote this prediction in my other blog, Tarot by Jacqueline Blog and I stated that I will have to buy a big statue of La Caridad de Cobre if I was right. Well, I was right, and next week I will be shopping for the largest statue of Ochun I can find.

There are other things written in Spanish that I will have to translate with my daughters, but this year if at all possible, find yellow Caridad de Cobre Candles, also known as the Virgin of Charity, affectionately called “La Cachita”, and light one each Friday throughout the year for blessings of love, romance, money and success from Ochun/Oshun/Oxum.

Saint Jude Thaddeus, also known as San Judas Tadeo in Latin countries, is considered to be the Patron Saint of “Lost Causes” – the Saint to go to when all hope is lost and there seems like nothing can change the inevitable that is coming. St. Jude is a popular Saint and one who the legend says like to be recognized with a public announcement when prayers are answered, usually has devotees who give nine days to a novena to him. Many adherents have different opinions regarding how many times each day, as some pray nine time for nine consecutive days, but the traditional length of time for a novena to Saint Jude is nine days. The quantity of prayers contained within each of those nine days is subject to one’s own discretion. Legend also says that the Saint’s desire to be recognized for good works stems from the confusion many have over Saint Jude and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed Jesus. They are not the same person. Saint Jude is one of the original Apostles who follow Jesus Christ and is depicted with a flame over his head, indicating he was in attendance at Pentecost. Saint Jude’s Feast Day is October 28th, according to the Catholic calendar.

To petition St. Jude with a white glass 7-day novena candle would be for situations that require a decision such as a court case, a lease or agreement or any other matter that does not involve personal relationships or money. It is best to clean the candle with lemon juice or Florida water and anoint with St Jude Oil before lighting. Writing a small petition for the purpose of the candle and placing it under the candle helps boost the power of the petition, however, if keeping your intention quiet from prying family members, holding the petition near your heart is a good alternative. Remember to purchase enough candles to make the novena for nine days since today’s candle do not last as long as before and you may need up to three to make the nine day novena. Remember to publish the prayers granted by San Judas in a newspaper or even a mass e-mail out to friends and family. Let them know the good works of St. Jude.

A white Saint Jude candle can be used in place of a colored wax St. Jude candle is not available. This is because white has all the colors of the rainbow in it, as a clear prism will refract the rainbow and in olden times there were no tinted wax candles, only creamy white ones made of tallow.

To petition Saint Jude on matters of love and personal relationships, it is best to use a pink Saint Jude candle.The color pink resonates the energy of two colors red and white. In candle spells, red is the traditional color for swiftness and passion. White candles are used when clarity and blessings are needed. The combination of the energy and passion of red and the clarity and blessings of white blend into pink, a color that evokes romance and affection.

In today’s world, we view Saint Valentine as the Saint who assists us in finding a lover and all the other rituals we have that is associated with February 14th such as giving cards, chocolates, jewelry, or sending flowers from the florist. Roses are the traditional flower to give on this day of lovers. There is a very different reason that San Valentin, or St. Valentine, is associated with love and lovers.

Saint Valentine, born in Italy and was a Holy Priest in Rome, assisted martyrs under persecution and was beheaded on the date that is set aside for lovers – February 14th. Before capture, he assisted St.Marius and family to give aid and safe lodging to those being sought out for their religious beliefs.

Saint Valentine, also known as San Valentin, is associated with lovers in the fact that on February 15th, a heathen festival in honor of their goddess Februata Juno, was held. In part of a custom, boys were to pick out slips of paper with girls’ names on them to court romantically. It is written that on the day after Valentine’s beating and beheading, the boxes where the name billets were gathered were filled with slips of paper with Valentine’s name on them. Since then, he has been associated with love and lovers.

Saint Valentine/San Valentin Love Candle Spell

INGREDIENTS

2 pink glass encased 7-day “novena” or “vigil” candles

Photos of each of you separately, to attach to outside glass of candle

Full name and birth date of each of you, on a slip of paper known as a ‘name paper’.

1 bottle of “Adam and Eve” or “Fire of Love” Anointing Oil

1 Red Rose in vase

1 glass Red or Blush Wine

Pinch of Ground Cinnamon

Clean candle with Lemon Juice or Florida Water as instructed in this blog post, “Candle Spell Candle Preparation Step by Step for Candleburning Success!”. Let set to dry.

Continue to follow steps to candle preparation, including carving oil wells and putting oil in the three holes. Sprinkle a good pinch of ground cinnamon over each candle. Attach name and birth date paper to bottom of candle and photo to each candle. Set a love altar somewhere, as in the bedroom, where you can leave candle lit continuously,setting the rose and the wine next to the two candles. Pray that St. Valentine will make each of you tender and loving only to each other, forsaking all others, until the end of time.

When candles are finished, take photos, name papers, rose petals and wine to the back yard of your home. Dig a small hole and place all in it, pouring the wine over all of the papers and petals. Cover with the dirt and place a good sized rock over it, to make the spot. You may want to consider planting a rose bush over the spot, in remembrance of Saint Valentine.

This upcoming weekend will be the feast day for Our Lady of Guadalupe, an avatar of the Virgen Mary that appeared to Juan Diego, a poor countryman of Tepayac, who told him of her wish to have a Shrine built when she visited him. Juan Diego petitioned the Bishop, who wanted proof and the Virgen instructed him to gather roses in his tilma, a blanket-type covering, to take to the Bishop. When he presented the roses to the Bishop, her image was imprinted on the tilma, thus convincing the construction to begin and making the tilma a Holy Relic.  The tilma was framed and is hanging in the Cathedral in Mexico City. On this day, many begin to decorate their Christmas trees in the United States and attend Mass with the Mariachi band playing music to the Virgen and later the family gathers at home for warm foods such as tamales, pozole and atole. Some bring the scarlet poinsettia plants to construct a household altar, as the poinsettia plant is native to Mexico. Many will light vigil candles such as this one, to offer petitions to Her.

The Virgen of Guadalupe is revered everywhere and Her image can be found on shirts, jewelry and many have her image as a tatoo to show devotion and asking for her protection. Here is one that I found on the Internet:

Some people believe that if you paint her image on the building where you have your business, that you will not be bothered with break-ins and graffiti. Ironically, it actually is true, as I have read an article that observations has shown that Her image reduces crime in the area. Here is a shop owner who wants a peaceful neighborhood.

Whatever your intensity of devotion to the Virgen of Guadalupe, you can agree that she is an influencal image throughout the Southwest and West. Many of these statues at this market will be relocating in the living rooms of many Latino families very soon.

I’m a 17-year-old who is in quite a pickle here. Ever since I bought the St. Michael statue, I have been dreaming with saints. Why is this happening to me?! How fortunate for you, but I bet at this time, it doesn’t feel like you won the lottery. Apparently, the introduction of Saint Michael has opened a door for you. PERSONAL STORY:When I was growing up, my Mother always had the Dell Horoscope magazine around and I would read it. I always had imaginary friends. I was content to play by myself and was an only child for seven years. I had quite the imagination. I always would hear things (and still do). That is called Clairaudience (to hear). Now, here I am, helping others as I am being helped.

Now, back to you. I suggest finding a spirituality that is comfortable with you – be it Native America, Santeria, Hoodoo and Rootwork or any other semi-organized belief systems. I am not suggesting in joining nay particular organization, but these came to mind when typing. You must follow your heart. I shared my grief with you as an example of trying to NOT listen to what seems to be your calling – a Spiritual Consultant and Worker. Better to go with the flow than against it, like I did, and life will bring to you what you need, including the right Teacher and Guide.

It is time again to make my quarterly offering ot the Goddess Ochun at the River. Offerings to her gives her sustenance and are in gratitude and petition for the good, sweet  things that make life worth living that have come and things to come.

Ochun is the Yoruba Goddess of Love, Money, Sexuality, Sensuality, Gold and all the sweet things in life. Her day of the week is Friday and since her number is 5, the first Friday in May (the 5th month) seemed only fitting.

If you have a need for love and money to come into your life, or if these have come because of your devotion to her, you may offer her a candle or a complete offering plate to her.

New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day Traditions

There are many ways that different cultures welcome in the New Year, but one thing is common that they have is lights, noise and food! Take a moment and read about how you can meld some of these traditions into a memorable ceremony for your home.

It is almost Universal that every home needs to be as clean as it possibly can. This means moving furniture, catching those “dust bunnies”, washing windows and for some, taking down the Christmas tree and cleaning up the pine needles as my family has been doing all this past week!

Many will spend the New Year’s with guests and visitors and if you are going to someone’s home, bring them a bottle of wine or champagne so that they can toast in the New Year in style. the sharing of food is also common, with certain traditional foods being made and consumed for a brighter year. In Greece, for example, January 1st is the feast of St. Basil, so traditional cakes baked with silver or gold coins in them are baked with the person retrieving the coin from their slice of cake being especially lucky that year.

In the Southern United States, many families make a feast of baked ham, black eyed peas with ‘pot liquor’ (the liquid from the peas), collard greens and cornbread. The greens symbolize green backs or “folding money” and the cornbread as “gold”. Some make their greens with a coin in the pot and some make a certain dish named “Hoppin’ John”, which has the black eyed peas and rice in a casserole type dish. While my family is from Louisiana and we prefer our black eyed peas over cornbread, we will be having a spiral cut ham and okra with our meal.

In Brazil, pratitioners of the indiginous religions of Santeria, Candomble, Macumba and Zarabanda create little boats of cardboard and fill them with little perfume bottles, candies, liquor and sweets, along with petitions and cast them adrift on the shore for the Goddess Iemanja/Yemoya/Yemaya to accept. If your boat is taken out to sea, you wishes will be granted that year.

No matter what tradition you follow, make sure you buy a new broom for the New Year, make sure the kitchen cabinets are full of nutritious foods, light white candles on the hearth or the family dining table and at midnight, open the front door and raise a toast to the incoming New Year 2009!

I wanted to tell you that the suggestion of burning the pink St. Jude candle for love worked for me! If you remember, I had a reading before Halloween and was telling you that despite my relationship with Jason being good, I wanted to know how I stood with him. If you remember we had been going out for 2 years and I wanted to know if there was a future from him and me. You said in the tarot reading that I had more school to get through (that was obvious) but I was going to be surprised at the New Year with my relationship.

You suggested that I burn the pink St. Jude Candles for clarity on whether our relationship was right and if Jason was the right man for me.
